The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that more than 3,500 people die from the hepatitis virus every day and increase the number of people affected in the world.
According to a WHO report released in conjunction with the Hepatitis Summit to be held in Portugal this week, new data from 187 countries have shown that the number of deaths rose to 1.3 million people in 2022 from 1.1 million in 2019.
despite the fact that there are common and inexpensive drugs that can treat the virus, the WHO report says that only three percent of those infected with chronic hepatitis received treatment to prevent the virus by the end of 2022.
Africa accounts for 63 percent of new infections of the disease, with only one in five children being vaccinated at birth on the continent.
